This just in....

Postby Darrel Hawthorne » Tue Jun 02, 2009 10:17 am

The following is a letter we received this morning......

Hello Diana,

My plan to build a stylish OB speaker similar to Hawthorne Audio Duet fell into stony ground. No wood workers here in Hong Kong were willing to take on a small project like this. I had no choice but to use improvised parts to build my own speakers.
Though they look odd (photo attached), they do sound great.
The best speakers I have ever owned.
My stereo setup is as follows:

CD Pro2LF transport (kit)
Audio Note Kit1 A300B SE (kit)
Audio Note DAC2.1 (Kit)
Plate Amp ReckHorn A-402

I would like to thank Hawthorne Audio for custom making the mounting plates for me.

Best Regards,

Man

Nice those are sweet! Highest grade craftsmanship BBlah

Those Audio Note kits look pretty nice, a bit out of my price range.

I'm assuming those are a test baffle of some sort? Where is the magnet mount?

Hey Jamie,
I made Man a couple pairs of 10" mounting plates and he tried to find someone local ( Hong Kong) to use these to build him a finished speaker.
This didn't work out so he made his own frame to hold these mounting plates in place.
Creative, resourcefull and likely his first attempt at making his own OB speakers.
Well done Man! =D>

Cheers,
Darrel :D

These are cool. Simple, functional and quick!

A bit of rubber or felt could be placed between the baffles and the frame for a bit of cheap isolation, too. So add "upgradeable" to the list of superlatives, too.

They look cool to me. Very industrial. If they sound good (and I bet they do), that's all that matters.

Yep, like Barry and Darrel said - simple, functional and a quick solution to an otherwise frustrating problem.
They look a lot better than most of my experimental baffles - it's good to cycle through a few options before you settle on a final choice, but I reckon the necessities are all illustrated in these simple baffles. The felt between the mounting plates and the frame is a good idea, as might be a little felt pad at each place where they contact the floor (to prevent scratches).
Well done Man - may you get much enjoyment from your Duets. :D

I guess I should read post more carefully before I post.

Darrel I thought you were implying that "you" built that as a finished speaker for a customer in Hong Kong. I would never intentionally mock any persons work, especially if it was their first attempt or they are not a wood working person.
I apologize If I came off wrong.

Hey Jamie,
This is sort of a joint venture.
Man did not have the tools or skills necessary to make the cutouts and asked if I could supply these to him.
I agreed to ship the drivers already mounted to the 1/2" Baltic Birch mounting plates.
Man's original plan was to provide these to a local woodworker to finish into a pair of Duets.
As explained above this proved to be difficult as no one seemed interested in such a small project.
I suspect this is common and getting someone to make simple but nice baffles in some parts of the world can be a real challenge.

We are currently Beta testing the Stackables and we should be getting some feed back on them soon. These could be used in similar instances as they can be flat packed and shipped most anywhere.

Thanks for the apology . The use of the BBlah (Barf) emotiacon may be perceived as a mite critical by anyone not knowing that you were thinking I built them as a commercial product.
I would be proud if that was my first project but considering my build history I can see why it was confusing. B_Hm!?!
Thanks for clearing that up. 8)

Cheers,
Darrel :D

Don't wory about it too much Jamie, we all suffer from foot in mouth syndrome at some point or another.

Man (not sure if you are on the forum or not),

Way to work with what you have. I am sure with a little practice you will be able to make some nice baffles in the future. Heck, if I can do it anyone can B_Y3P!
